Why storytelling?

Stories connect us.

Stories create a web of connection, and open up a space for us to deeply listen, authentically connect, and come together as a community. Storytelling is a social act, and when we gather together to listen to a story, we share a powerful common experience.

Storytelling engages our minds, hearts, and souls.

As storytellers, when we tell stories in the live moment, we engage our hearts, minds, and souls, and this communicates directly to the minds, hearts, and souls of our listeners. This makes storytelling one of the richest and deepest forms of communication available to us as humans.

The wisdom of stories provides a map to guide us through uncharted territory.

Listening to traditional stories, and reflecting on our own life’s stories help us connect and discover our own resilience, inner wisdom, and insight. When faced with challenges or change, the wisdom we discover in stories provides us guidance on how to move forward.

FAQ About Storytelling

Is storytelling the same as story-writing?

No, storytelling and story-writing are very different, and use distinct sets of skills. Storytelling is the oral art of sharing a story from the inner imagination of a storyteller to a group of listeners in the live moment. Each time a story is told it is a unique event, co-created by the teller and the listener. Due to this storytelling is a dynamic and social art, and the words and content change each time. Story-writing is a written art, and is the act of creating or writing a story down to be read by a reader.

Why do you work with adults and adolescents? Isn’t storytelling for children?

I believe that storytelling is for all ages. Storytelling isn’t just for children. While storytelling is often an experience of childhood, I believe it should be part of all phases of our lives. Through my work, I have found that telling stories to adults and adolescents is deeply meaningful, and has transformative power to connect us to some of the very deepest part of our hearts and souls. Storytelling is for anyone who finds themselves at a crossroads in life; wishes to connect more deeply with themselves or others; seeks meaning and understanding in life; and wishes to engage their creativity.

Do you do keynote speeches?

I can prepare a storytelling performance that addresses most themes including celebrations, achievements, how to navigate challenge and change, diversity in the workplace, and much more.

If you are looking for an engaging, innovative and creative presentation that communicates with your audience holistically- to the mind, heart, and soul- then my bespoke storytelling performances are the right fit for you.

What kind of stories do you use in your storytelling work?

For the most part, I use traditional stories- folktales, myths, and fairy tales. These are stories that have been passed down through oral heritage for many generations in communities all over the world. The process of working with these stories is in-depth, and I research multiple versions of a story as I prepare my telling of the story. I also look at considerations such as linguistic, historical and cultural context, and cultural appropriation when selecting and preparing a story. With any story that I share, I always name the source of the story- either a community, culture, or the teller from whom I first heard the story.

I also work with personal storytelling- either telling stories from my own life, or helping others share the stories of their lives.
